Work, Rest or Play

Work Rest and Play

Praise and Glory be to Allah Most High and peace and blessings upon the Chosen One, Muhammad al-Mustafa, sallalahu alaihi wa sallam, whom God sent as a Mercy to the Worlds.

Ibn Ata’illah wrote in his famous work Al-Hikam, “Do not look forward to being free of alterities (al-aghyaar) for that is indeed what cuts you off from vigilant attention (al-Muraaqaba) to Him in that very state that He has assigned to you.” In other words, don’t delude yourself into thinking you can fix up your relationship with Allah, after you have dealt with all the distractions of the dunya. The multiplicity of the world and its power to keep us distracted will remain until the very end. The point is to be mindful of Allah, Most High, and what He requires from us at the very moments when that distraction seems the greatest.

As the spring term comes to an end today—and alhmadulillah, the weather brightens some what—we all have a chance to take a break from the 'busy-ness' of the world to work on those things that really matter: our own, our children’s and our families’ relationship with Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). And even if we don’t seem to get a chance to take a break from the demands of the world, we have to make time to reflect anyhow.

“When thou art free from thine immediate task, still labour hard.”

There is a feeling of excitement in the air today as children and staff rush to and fro busily preparing cakes, selling cakes and working hard in general to help raise funds for Syrian refugees. If they see their work as toil and labour, an exercise in making money, their work will remain in this world, and end with this world. If they see their work as a means to help others, and thereby please Allah, the fruits of their efforts will literally extend into eternity. This is the mindset we all should have as we deal with the demands of the dunya. Be it work, rest or play.
