Shakespeare and Islam 2: the Sonnets

Shakespeare's Sonnets is a timeless collection that elucidates the universal themes of love, beauty and mortality. In this talk, Hamza Yusuf provides an insightful commentary on Sonnet 129, which illuminates the darkest sins that flow from the extremes of human love.

Hamza Yusuf sheds light on the centrality of the sonnet's themes, categorizing the seven deadly sins into diseases of love and hate. It is the very indulgences of these sins which are at the core of what ails us all today. Only through recognition and understanding of these destructive vices can we overcome the weaknesses within us and aspire to ways of virtue and moral excellence.

This lecture was delivered at the Globe Theatre and is part of our study of Shakespeare commemorating 400 years of the great playwrights works. It also part of the school's teaching on "Our Country, Our Values."
